Hike to Cliff Lake on Saturday, August 6, 2011

The Mt. Shasta  Association has scheduled a hike to Middle Cliff Lake, slated for Saturday August 6th. Hikers will be walking a gentle up and down 1.8 miles past Cedar Lake and Lower Cliff Lake.

Meeting place is 111 Morgan Way, in front of the Best Western Tree House Motor Inn in Mt. Shasta at 9 am. (Just east of the freeway and the Central Mount Shasta exit) Note: it’s not the Fish Hatchery this time!

Participants will carpool and return about 3 pm. Bring lunch, water and bathing suit for a refreshing swim.

Cedar Lake, which will be passed on the way to Middle Cliff Lake, was the site of an interesting climate study. Researchers figured out that the sediment in the bottom of that shallow lake was stratified and contained a lot of pollen.

By determining plant species in each layer, they were able to accurately map climate change over the last 10,000 years — since the last ice age.

Middle Cliff Lake, the hike destination, is half private land and features a small cabin and a dock.
