On Saturday September 21, the Mount Shasta Trail Association invites the public on a moderate 4 mile round trip hike along Mud Creek Canyon to Clear Creek on the southeast side of Mt. Shasta. There is a steady 2,100 foot elevation gain starting at 6,500 feet in an old growth Shasta Red Fir forest which then opens up to views that become more and more spectacular. The trail heads between the Konwokiton and Wintun Glaciers (the third largest in California). Mud Creek Falls, the largest falls on Mt. Shasta can be seen across the mile wide canyon. Shastarama Point, Thumb Rock and the upper reaches of Mt. Shasta are in sight as well, all making for a breathtaking view. Wildflowers are abundant in this stunning volcanic basin.
Meeting place is 111 Morgan Way, the street in front of the Best Western Tree House Motor Inn (near Ray’s) at 9 am. Participants will carpool from there. Bring lunch and water. Hiking poles are recommended. Expect to return by 5 pm. Since this hike is in the Mt. Shasta Wilderness, no dogs are permitted.
