The Mount Shasta Trail Association invites the public on a four-mile round-trip hike to see the McCloud River waterfalls on Saturday May 16th.
Hikers will meet at 111 Morgan Way in front of the Best Western Tree House at 9:00 am. Participants will then form carpools to travel to the hike. Bring a lunch, water, and sun protection. Hikers should expect to return by 3:00 pm. For questions, call Joan Roemer at 926-0647.
The falls are lava flows at least hundreds of thousands of years old that resulted in isolating a trout population above the falls. The fish – the redband trout – are considered a unique subspecies of the rainbow trout.
Sites along the trail include the lower, middle and upper falls. The hike will turn around in the vicinity of Lakin Dam, which was constructed by the original McCloud River Lumber Company to divert water to the mill pond in McCloud. Hikers will also view Bigelow Meadows behind the dam.
The hike is free of charge.
