For a beautiful lake destination hike, The Mount Shasta Trail Association invites the public on a 5 mile round trip hike to Toad Lake and Porcupine Lake in the Eddy Mountains Saturday, July 11th. To reach the trailhead, participants will be carpooling 11 miles on a gravel road. Initially, the hike is a moderate uphill walk for a short distance and then is mostly level with gentle up and downs. Hikers will first come to Toad Lake at 6,900 feet, south of Mt. Eddy, set in a rock bowl carved by glacial action. The hikers will then climb up to the Pacific Crest Trail at 7,600 feet and walk along the PCT to the junction of a side trail leading to Porcupine Lake. A short uphill climb and–voilá , Porcupine Lake in an absolutely pristine setting. Those hikers wanting more distance can travel north on the PCT for breath taking views of Mt Shasta and Mt Eddy.
Meeting place is 111 Morgan Way, Mt Shasta, the street in front of the Best Western Tree House Motor Inn at 9:oo AM. Four-wheel-drive vehicles are not required but high clearance vehicles are recommended. Bring lunch and water. Bring your bathing suit for a refreshing swim. Participants will return about 4:oo PM.
