Siskiyou Wanderers March 2012 Hiking Schedule

Here’s the March 2012 schedule for the Siskiyou Wanderers (reprinted with permission):

Mar 1: Louie Rd: Yes, another road hike in Shasta Valley. We’ll stroll through rustic ranch land while gazing up at the mountain. Afterward we’ll head over to the Hart’s cozy cabin for a potluck. Theme tba. AD: 6-7 miles THE: 2600′ AEG: 400 PMP: Louie Rd exit off I-5 T: 9:00am

Mar 8: Snow Day: If snow conditions are good, let’s go over to Scott Mountain and see if we can follow the PCT out to that fantastic over-look. Check your email for possible schedule or meeting place change on this day. AD: 5-7 miles THE: 5400′ AEG: 800′ PMP: Gazelle Grange T: 9:00 am.

Mar 15: Hayden Ridge: A pleasant & scenic hike up a public road that goes through a private hunting preserve/ranch located between Callahan & Gazellle. Lush valley views from the ridge, although they may be snow covered this time of year. AD: 7-8 miles THE: 3510′ AEG: 1830′ PMP: Yreka Mall T: 9:00 am.

Mar 22: Klamath River/Ash Creek: A fairly level road hike along the Klamath River starting at the Ash Creek Bridge. AD: 8-9 miles THE: 2800′ AEG: 780′ PMP: Yreka Mall T: 9:00 am.

Mar 29: Masterson Rd: A good ole’ road hike stand-by through slightly hilly ranch lands near Callahan. If snow conditions are favorable we could swap this out for a snow day! AD: 6-7 miles THE: 3300′ AEG: 800′ PMP: Gazelle Grange T: 9:00 am.

Siskiyou Wanderers February 2012 Hiking Schedule

Feb 2: Kidder Creek Rd: We park near the Abbey, then head up this quiet road that follows Kidder Creek. It can be a little snowy there, so wear warm shoes. Just pack a snack, we’ll have lunch and a beer at Cold Stream Tavern. Yum!! AD: 6-8 miles THE: 3130′ AEG: 720′ PMP: Yreka Mall T: 9:00 am.

Feb 9: Hay Stack: A short hike up a familiar butte with open views of the Shasta Valley – A great way to break those winter blues!! AD: 6 miles THE: 3450′ AEG: 800′ PMP: A-12/Hwy 97 T: 9:00 am.

Feb 16: Snow Day: We’ll ski and snowshoe wherever we didn’t last month. AD: 3-5 miles THE: 5000-6000′ AEG: 500-1000′ PMP: Mt Shasta Fish Hatchery T: 9:00 am.

Feb 23: Ball Mnt/Little Shasta Rd: We’ll hike the road up the Little Shasta River, past the historic Tailholt town marker. We’ve seen both elk and antelope in this area in the past. Bring your binoculars. AD: 6-7 miles THE: 3000 AEG: 500′ PMP: Montague Statue T: 9:00a

Siskiyou Wanderers January 2012 Hiking Schedule

Jan 5: Shasta Wildlife Refuge: A favorite hike for many. If we stay on the roads near the lakes we should see many of the migratory birds that pass through our area. Let’s have lunch at the Dutchman afterward to celebrate the New Year. AD: 8 +/- miles THE: 2500′ AEG: minimal PMP: Yreka Mall T: 9:00 am.

Jan 12: West Scar Face Rd: This year we’ll park where Hamlin Gulch Rd intersects Scar face and see if we can hike the gravel road to the summit to peer over onto East Scar Face Rd. AD: 8 – 10 miles THE: 2800′ AEG: 500′ PMP: Yreka Mall T: 9:00 am.

Jan19: Snow Day: We’ll ski and snowshoe wherever we think the conditions are best; Bunny Flat, Sand Flat, Castle Lake?? AD: 3-5 miles THE: 5000-6000′ AEG: 500-100′ PMP: Mt Shasta Fish Hatchery T: 9:00 am

Siskiyou Wanderers June Hiking Schedule

Join the Siskiyou Wanderers for great hiking in Siskiyou County every Thursday. Here’s the June schedule:

June 3: Sacramento River Trail / Wanderers Annual Picnic: A potluck picnic in the park follows a hike of the Sacramento River Trail near Castella. Come help us celebrate our 24th year of great hikes with terrific friends in Dunsmuir Park. Bring your best potluck dish to share and/or meat to grill. All Wanderers, Meanderers and new hikers invited to celebrate spring, life and our special neck of the woods.

June 10: Cabin Meadows Creek: A new road hike in the beautiful Cabin Meadows Creek drainage east of Callahan. Depending on snow conditions m ay be able to hike to Cabin Meadows Lakes. Some cross country.
AD: 5-7 miles THE: 5,670′ AEG: 1,230′ PMP: Gazelle Grange/Jct Kangaroo Lake Road T: 9:00 am/9:35 am.

June 17: Campbell and Cliff Lakes: Hike this pretty trail along Shackelford Creek and enjoy streamside views, wildflowers, meadows, lakes, and forest. Let’s leave our footprints before the summer hordes descend.

June 24: Martins Dairy Area: A beautiful meadow beyond Goosenest Mountain. Should have plenty of spring flowers. Depending on snow, can either hike Martins Dairy road loop, to Panther Rock, or climb Ball Mtn.

Siskiyou Wanderers May Hiking Schedule

Join the Siskiyou Wanderers for great hiking in Siskiyou County every Thursday. Here’s the May schedule.

May 6: Hotlum/Cinder Cone Loop: Join Igor and Suzanne on a trek in their neck of the woods. Hike the Hotlum/Cinder Cone Loop. See high desert flora as contrasted to our usual fare of alpine plants and trees. A grill/potluck lunch at Igor and Suzanne’s (5936 Jackson Ranch road) after the hike to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. Igor and Suzanne will grill and provide the meat, everyone else bring a side dish or desert to share.

May 13: Weiss Ranch: This is a new hike. Jeff and Cindy Weiss (who live off the grid) gave their permission for the Wanderers to hike on their ranch. Should have plenty of wild flowers and great views of Shasta Valley.
AD: 5+ miles THE: 2.780 AEG: 800’+ PMP: Montague Statue T: 9:00 am.

May 20: Table Rock: Lower and Upper Table Rock (2 short hikes) north of Medford over looking the Rogue River. The views from these promontories s are great. But that’s not the reason for driving so far. This are is know for its many varieties of wild flowers (April-May peak season). NO DOGS! Poison Oak & Ticks to watch out for. Lets leave earlier due to travel distance.
AD: 3.5/2.5 miles THE: 1.300/1.200′ AEG: 700’/800′ PMP: Yreka Mall. T: 8:30 am.

May 27: Cabin Creek (aka, Squaw Valley Creek): A popular hike along a beautiful creek. Hike up the PCT to the saddle, thence down a road to the lower end of the creek trail. Hike the trail along the creek back to the trailhead.
AD: 10 miles THE: 2,200′ AEG: 2,600′ PMP: Mt. Shasta Fish Hatchery T: 9:00 am.

Siskiyou Wanderers April Hiking Schedule

April 1: Bunny Flat/Mt. Shasta: Since we were unable to do this earlier, let’s Cross Country Ski and/or Snowshoe from Bunny Flat to the Old Ski Bowl. Hikers can do North Lake Siskiyou Trail.
AD: 6 miles THE: 6,900′ AEG: 780′ PMP: Mt. Shasta Fish Hatchery T: 9:00 am.

April 8: Scarface Road: Walk the road on the west side of Shasta Valley w hike the high country remains blanketed with snow. Starting point depends on snow levels, hopefully we can start near the junction of Winters Gulch Rd. No host lunch at the Pizza Factory in Weed after the hike.
AD: 7-8 miles THE: 2,800′ AEG: 1,000′ PMP: Gazelle Grange T: 9:00 am.

April 15: French Creek/Miners Creek Loop: An enjoyable road hike located near Etna, passing ranch lands, creeks, and some forested areas. After the hike, let’s have dessert at Bob’s Ranch House.
AD: 6 miles THE: 2,850′ AEG: 600′ PMP: Bob’s Ranch House, Etna T: 9:00 am.

April 22: Diller Canyon Road: A new hike recommended by Suzanne and Igor. Hike from the end of Truck Village Drive near Black Butte and I-5 along a forest road east toward Diller Canyon through Pine Plantations.
AD: 9-10 miles THE: 3,940′ AEG: 900′ PMP: Mt. Shasta Fish Hatchery T: 9:00 am.

April 29: Pilot Rock: This is one of our favorite hikes each spring. Usually the flowers and views are great. You have choice of climbing the rock or walking the trail beyond the rock to have lunch. Bring your camera.
