Antarctic Wildlife and Geography Presentation on Tuesday, January 3, 2012 at the Mount Shasta Resort

Siskiyou Land Trust will host a slideshow highlighting Antarctic wildlife and geography by Steve Morrell scheduled for Tuesday, January 3, beginning at 7 p.m. at the Mount Shasta Resort. Morrell spent five Southern Hemisphere summers in the 1970’s and 80’s studying Adelie penguins and South Polar skuas at Cape Crozier on Ross Island in the Antarctic.

Cape Crozier is at the interface of the Ross Ice Shelf, 200,000 square miles of floating glacial ice, and the Ross Sea.  It is also home to the southernmost breeding colony of Emperor penguins, a site first visited by Edward Wilson who was a member of Robert Scott’s ill-fated expedition to the South Pole. The winter trek to Cape Crozier by Wilson and his two companions is detailed in The Worst Journey in the World.

In addition to wildlife photos, Morrell will include pictures of nearby Antarctic landscapes including Mt. Erebus, a 12,000 foot volcano, the Dry Valleys, and the Erebus Glacier tongue.

The program is a fundraiser for Siskiyou Land Trust.  Suggested donation is $5 per person.Antarctic's penguins, wildlife, and geography
